António Sérgio de Sousa (1883-1969), known simply as António Sérgio (his literary name), was a man ahead of his time. With ideas and an openness of mind that a youth spent on several continents and military service in the Portuguese navy provided him, the world experienced and not just the world heard, to which was added the fall in Portugal of a centuries-old monarchical regime, replaced by an ill-fated first republican regime with its procession of more or less capable decisions, he was a unique figure in Portuguese culture.

A Humanist, in the true sense of the word, capable of analyzing, understanding, and discussing with authority on the widest variety of subjects. A reflection of this are both his writings, his interviews, as well as the testimonies of those who lived with him. The library that belonged to him is composed of more than seven thousand copies that are divided between philosophy, pedagogy, sociology, history, art, physics, cooperativism, etc., many of these works being marked with Sérgio's notes.
