poemas-envelope
Poem Envelope

Poemas Envelope brings together a collection of poems written by Emily Dickinson on previously used correspondence envelopes, published in a bilingual edition by Edições do Saguão. This edition fully follows the 2016 New Directions edition, made from a selection of facsimile reproductions (slightly smaller than the originals) of Emily Dickinson’s envelope poems, taken from the complete edition The Gorgeous Nothings (2013). These poems are not only written on envelopes carefully kept by the author for reuse, but also have characteristics resulting from the precarious medium on which they were written, making their reading as unstable as their writing. Thus, the poems are, quite properly, envelope poems, and the word “envelope” becomes a qualifier, since the direction, the line breaks, the separation between words, the containment, and the variants are guided by the shape of the paper.

In this edition, Emily Dickinson’s handwriting is transcribed respecting the layout, orientation, hesitations, noted variants, and crossings-out, presenting an openness of the text that resists conventional page arrangement and single interpretation. In the Portuguese translation of these envelope poems, the aim was to reconstruct the fleeting images brought by the poems and, at the same time, reproduce, as closely as possible, the layout of the text on the paper.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0735/2729/6266/files/OIP_1_9d74a3b4-19be-4e44-96b4-728835b4d71b.jpg?v=1742066512
