Annihilation (2022)

Sereno. At first glance, the novel is a political thriller: terrorist attacks, power intrigues, secret services. It is merely the backdrop. We are never safe. The collapse of the body, of intimate life. What could have been epic becomes a slow elegy: illness, aging, death, without anesthesia.

Not the cry of civilization's revolt. Its final sigh.
Our wake, in slow motion.

Michel Houellebecq, born in 1956 on the island of Réunion, is the great saboteur of contemporary illusions. They call him a provocateur, misogynist, Islamophobe, reactionary. But what really disturbs is the relentless lucidity with which he exposes the emptiness of modern life. His writing works as a diagnosis of a Europe in terminal condition, always masking decay with hollow discourses on freedom and progress. Between sarcasm and melancholy, the abyss.
