Night falls in Caracas
Caracas, Venezuela: In a country that before the crisis was a land of dreams, beauty and prosperity, and which is now torn apart by corruption, crime and repression, Adelaida is simply trying to survive.
Her mother, a teacher and her lifelong companion, has just died after a prolonged illness. Adelaida, thirty-eight, is left with nothing and no one, adrift in a city where everything is lacking except violence and extortion.
A few days after the funeral, Adelaida finds her house occupied by a group of women working for the regime. She decides to seek refuge at her neighbour's house, but when she knocks on the door, she is met only with silence. Aurora Peralta, whom everyone calls “the Spaniard's daughter,” lies dead on the living room floor. On the table is a letter informing her that her Spanish passport has been granted: a safe conduct to escape from hell.
To survive, Adelaida will have to stop being who she is.
Night falls in Caracas is the portrait of a woman who, faced with an extreme situation, will have to transform herself, renounce her past to cling to a new life. It is the story of many other women, many other men, children, old people, cornered in a country where violence, misery and betrayal set the daily rhythm of existence. An extraordinary novel that holds great promise in Spanish literature.
