In Watermelon Sugar, we are told of a narrator who recounts his experiences in this utopian (is it?) post-apocalyptic world, where the sun changes colour from day to day, where everything is made of watermelon sugar, and where life is lived in peace and apathetic tranquillity, with references to the experimental communes of the 1960s, always contrasted with the latent violence of inBOIL—a violence that can be seen as true freedom.

Brautigan seems to be suggesting another place in which to experience life, testing the imagination and winking at the counterculture generation.

It is in the denial of reality that alternatives are found here, in the company of characters who are, at the very limit, profoundly real.
