“A Man Without a Country is something like an adult version of the 21st-century Little Prince.” John Freeman

A Man Without a Country, the author's first book since 1999, shows that Kurt Vonnegut remains one of the great names in contemporary American literature.

Composed of short essays generously illustrated with drawings by the author, A Man Without a Country reveals a Vonnegut loudly expressing his indignation while at the same time communicating affectionately with his fellow Americans. The author gives voice to his enthusiasm for human expressions as diverse as the blues and the selfless commitment of librarians.

But above all, he gives voice to his disgust at what he diagnoses as the subversion of the democratic process facilitated by George W. Bush's government, denounces the "psychopathic personalities" of that administration, and reflects on corruption and recent corporate scandals.

A record that is sometimes humorous, at other times actormented, and always, always defiant. Here is the theme: "There is no reason why good cannot triumph over evil, provided that the angels organize themselves more or less like the mafia."

Kurt Vonnegut was born in Indianapolis, United States, in 1922. He is the author of thirty novels, several essays and plays, many of which have been adapted for film and television. He is one of the few great masters of contemporary American literature. He died on April 11, 2007.
