It does not merely play with fear; it dismantles the very notion of identity. Published in 1954 under the original title D’entre les morts, the novel is a labyrinth of obsession, desire and manipulation, where nothing is as it seems and the truth is just another construction on the brink of collapse. The story, which would later be immortalised by Hitchcock, was already a perverse game on the page: a man haunted by guilt (see Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment) is hired to follow a woman. A game of appearances where love, death and madness dance together in a seductive abyss.

The narrative is dry, calculated, harrowing. The atmosphere is claustrophobic. The main character, paralysed both physically and emotionally, becomes a mirror of society itself: powerless, easily manipulated, desperate for a fantasy.

Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac, French masters of the psychological detective novel, formed one of the most unsettling partnerships in mystery literature. They wrote together. They rejected the classic “whodunit” model to delve into “why one loses their mind”. With Vertigo, they created a work that continues to drag readers to the bottom of the abyss.
