Passion According to G. H.

I hope you are not a lazy reader. The Passion According to G. H. is a descent into hell. A seemingly ordinary woman crushes a cockroach in the maid's room and finds herself forced to strip away all her civilized certainties. What begins as a gesture of disgust turns into a revelation. A violent one.

Despite the plot, this book is not a story. It is a confrontation with what you hide beneath your neat exterior. A woman in collapse, a privileged woman in the midst of a shipwreck.

Clarice writes as if she were cutting meat on a butcher's counter. With precision, innocence, and brutality. No longer appealing to bourgeois comfort, comfortable identity, or moral thinking.

Clarice Lispector (1920–1977), born in Ukraine and raised in Brazil, wrote the unspeakable. She was and remains one of the most striking authors in Portuguese literature. Reading Clarice carries the risk of never thinking the same way again.

This book is one of her hardest punches.
