The distance

Somewhere in not so distant a future, Humanity struggles to survive on a planet Earth ravaged by inequality and climate collapse, while large corporations and the most privileged prepare to live on Mars.

The Distance, a play by Tiago Rodrigues that premiered at the Festival d’Avignon in 2025, throws us onto a lost island in the vastness of the cosmos, where a father with his feet planted on Earth and a daughter with her head already on Mars struggle to maintain a relationship, love, memories, the possibility of communication and, each in their own way, hope.

In orbit, two worlds that attract and alienate each other stand face to face, two ways of facing life, two generations separated by millions of kilometres, by choices and by consequences, but still united by “a constant love.”

“Perhaps now, that we are on different planets, we can draw closer.”
