One of his earliest short story collections and an essential book for understanding the author's literary universe. Divided into three parts, Telephone Calls, Detectives and The Life of Anne Moore, it brings together stories that vibrate between the real and the imaginary, intimacy and violence.

In a brief format, the themes that run through his entire work are condensed: exile, loss, fear, the search for meaning. The language is dry and precise, but also imbued with melancholy.

The banal gesture of a telephone call becomes a symbol of distance and the impossibility of communication. The narrative voice, always lucid, reveals a critical awareness of contemporary times: that of global loneliness and fragmented memory. A euphemism for "no one actually wants to know what happened".

Like the classics, it leaves an echo.

Roberto Bolaño (1953–2003), born in Chile and based between Mexico and Spain, was one of the most striking writers of contemporary Latin American literature. Originally a poet, he brought the intensity and precision of poetry to prose. His work, which includes The Savage Detectives, 2666 and Chilean Night, reflects a rare ethical and existential concern. Literature as the territory of those who survive. He died at 50. He survived.
