Those who try to put their books in order must begin by recognizing and then altering a large part of their mental landscape. This is a delicate task, full of surprises and discoveries, but without a single solution.

It is, as underlined in this work, a highly metaphysical theme.

In the book, the account of several attempts, mixed with fragments of an involuntary autobiography of the author, the mythical editor of Adelphi.

For us, it was an essential book.

Roberto Calasso (1941-2021) was an Italian editor, writer, and essayist. In 1962 he joined the newly created Adelphi, where he worked uninterruptedly and became editorial director in 1971 and general director in 1990. From 1999, he became president of the publishing house. Alongside his editorial activity, Calasso developed a career as a writer and essayist. In his works, he questions myths and the past to investigate the present of the human being.
