Anthology of Prose and Poetry.

One of the most unsettling texts by Ossip Mandelstam, written in the eye of the political and moral hurricane that was post-revolutionary Russia. The poet observes the birth of the new Soviet order and realizes that what was heralded as liberation is turning into tyranny disguised as hope. Freedom as a ghost that is summoned, not lived.

With tense, almost biblical language, the text blends prophecy, despair, and lucidity. Mandelstam refuses silence and pays dearly for it. Poetry, for him, is the last stronghold of dignity, the only possible resistance in a world where truth is punished.

“We live without feeling the country beneath our feet,” he would later write, when Stalin’s terror was already absolute.

Ossip Mandelstam (1891–1938) was one of the most intense voices in 20th-century Russian poetry. Born in Warsaw and raised in Saint Petersburg, he was a member of the Acmeist group, which advocated for precise, concrete poetry in opposition to Symbolism. Accused of “counter-revolutionary activities” after a satirical poem about Stalin, he was arrested and eventually died in a labor camp.
