An urban fable that exposes, with dark irony and precision, human fragility in a world where fear has become routine. The story follows a group of men threatened by everyday life, by the city, and by themselves. The absurd sets in slowly, like a news story that is all too plausible.

The novel acts as a mirror for a society living between panic and indifference, between the desire to disappear and the desire to be seen.

“When reality starts to look like a cartoon, the only sensible thing to do is learn to walk on the walls,”

A serious satire about emotional, political, and social precariousness.

"Today I woke up in a good mood. It took me only half an hour to get out of bed. I had breakfast on the street and went to work. I faced some pretty difficult tests. Popping balloons. An endless number of balloons.

I traveled a lot, a little bit across all the continents, armed with nothing but a spear, or, alternatively, a dart gun with which I eliminated the balloons, one by one. Pop! I couldn't let them touch me – they were toxic balloons, or poisonous, or something like that. Every time they touched me, I died, and I only had three lives, so I couldn't let them touch me.

The hardest country was perhaps Denmark, because of the snow that fell at the same time as the balloons, blending in with them. It was a blood-curdling thrill: I never knew whether what was touching me was a lethal balloon or just a harmless snowflake."

Rui Zink, born in Lisbon in 1961, is one of the most singular voices in contemporary Portuguese literature. A writer, teacher, and intellectual provocateur, he has built a body of work marked by irony, social criticism, and a rare ability to transform the everyday into revealing absurdity.

In books such as O Destino Turístico, A Instalação do medo, or Hotel Lusitano, he explores the tension between fantasy and reality: humor as a sharp form of thought. In Homens-Aranhas, this tension reaches one of its most luminous points: a novel that amuses in order to hurt.
