Girl on her way
Story. Short. Incisive. A whisper. It carries the cruel precision of one who knows that every word cuts. A poor girl, sent by her parents to the city in search of a better future. But it is not the future. It is a trap.
Helpless, you will watch this journey, like one watches an animal, left to its own fate.
What remains is not what is said. It is what is left unsaid. That which is guessed.
The silence is brutal. Every omission, an indictment. Every pause, a cry. The tone is almost biblical, of an absurd violence, veiled as normality. There is no mercy or comfort. Only a path. And a "girl" delivered as an offering.
An unyielding critique of family passivity, of misery, of the society that normalizes the sacrifice of the most vulnerable.
Raduan Nassar, born in 1935, was never the writer that critics love to applaud. The son of Lebanese immigrants, he abandoned literature to devote himself to agriculture. Only three published works - Lavoura Arcaica, Um Copo de Cólera, Menina a Caminho. Unavoidable.
