Evasion plan

The prison island where Henrique Nevers disembarks one day to serve as its administrator resembles a strange purgatory that seems to lead to an even more mysterious hell.

• But why did he disembark here?
• What secret events drove him to this decision to abandon the woman he loves?
• Will his existence in this penitentiary not be merely a reflection of another existence?
• And what does Castel truly intend, the all-powerful and Machiavellian governor of this devil’s island, with whom, from the very first day, Nevers is locked in an involuntary mental duel?
• What experiments does he conduct, and what is his secret plan for the prisoners?

The final revelation, pieced together through partial glimpses and stealthy deaths, sheds an unexpected light on the fate of all the characters.

With this book, Bioy Casares wrote what is recognized as one of the most important works in 20th-century Hispanic literature.
